Regular check-ups

Regular check-ups

Regular paediatric check-ups are important for monitoring your child's development and for early intervention. During these check-ups I examine height, weight, reflexes and general health indicators and keep you informed.

Why are regular check-ups important?

Even when a child has no complaints, regular check-ups make it possible to follow whether growth and development are on track for their age. When changes that need attention are noticed in time, the necessary steps can also be taken in time.

What is checked during a check-up?

Height and weight are measured and compared with previous results. Reflexes, general physical condition and age-appropriate developmental milestones are assessed. I explain the results to you in detail and we agree on the date of the next check-up together.

Benefits for parents

Regular check-ups are also a good opportunity to gather your questions about your child's health and have them answered in one place. Topics such as feeding, sleep, the vaccination schedule and daily routine can be discussed at these appointments.

How to book a check-up

In addition to regular check-ups, contact me straight away whenever you notice any illness, discomfort or change. You can book by phone, via WhatsApp or through the contact form on the website.

What is checked at a routine visit

MeasureWhy it is checked
Weight and heightTo follow the growth curve against WHO child growth standards
Head circumferenceTo follow brain and skull growth, especially in the first two years
General physical examinationHeart, lungs, abdomen, skin, bones and muscles
Developmental milestonesMotor, speech, social and play skills for the child's age
Vision and hearingEarly detection of signs that need attention
Feeding and sleepDaily routine, appetite, night waking

The table shows what is looked at during a visit; how much is needed at a given age depends on the child.

What to bring

The vaccination card, documents from the maternity hospital, notes of previous measurements (weight, height) and any test results. Keeping records consistently makes the growth curve meaningful — it is the direction of change, not a single measurement, that matters.

If you have questions about feeding, they are covered in a separate nutrition consultation; if a vaccination is due, the vaccination service can be planned at the same visit.

How a visit is structured

A routine check-up usually follows the same four stages. It begins with a conversation: what has changed since the last visit — feeding, sleep, mood, any illnesses and any medicines being taken. Next come the measurements, recorded alongside the previous entries. The third stage is the general physical examination and a review of age-appropriate developmental milestones. At the end I explain what was observed, point out what to watch for, and we agree together on roughly when the next visit should be.

Time is set aside for the parent's questions. If you have a list, say so at the start of the visit — that way nothing is left out because time ran short at the end.

Why records should be kept together

A growth curve is built from a sequence of measurements, not from a single one. It therefore helps to keep the maternity hospital documents, the vaccination card and the result of every visit in one folder. Measurements taken elsewhere matter too — bring those as well, because an uninterrupted curve is much easier to interpret.

If you keep the records on your phone, photographs are perfectly adequate; what matters is having them to hand during the visit.
